Excursion destinations around Ellmau in Tyrol

The idyllic village Ellmau is known among the German-speaking audience for the TV series “Der Bergdoktor”, which was also filmed in the inn at the Föhrenhof among other places. The mountain region is a playground for mountaineers and active families who can experience worthwhile hours in Ellmi’s Magic World up at the Hartkaiser. On different adventure paths little visitors are challenged to solve tricky riddles. Around Ellmau there are special places which wait to be discovered such as the energetic Ellmau stone ring on the Wochenbrunner Alm, the Way of the Cross to the Anna grotto near the stone ring or the Rübezahl path with 22 carved figures.

Only a stone’s throw from Ellmau lies the mundane small town of Kitzbühel, which is not only famous in winter for its lively nightlife and exclusive boutiques. Nestled at the foot of the Hahnenkamm hill and the Kitzbüheler Horn, the town called “Gamsstadt” belongs to the most important winter sports destinations of Austria and has mainly become famous for the Hahnenkamm race, which is attended by numerous stars every year.

Several other top events such as the Kitzbüheler Alpenrally, the Austrian Open, the Triathlon World Cup at the Schwarzsee, the Golf Festival Kitzbühel, the Harley Davidson Event “Kitz on Wheels”, the Tour of Austria, the Hansi Hinterseer Open Air or the Hypo Lichtenstein Snow Arena Polo World Cup – to name only the biggest – offer an attractive and extensive programme for your holidays in Tyrol.

Situated between the Brandenberger Alps and the Zahmer Kaiser mountains, the district town Kufstein has already been known as the gate to Tyrol centuries ago. After a lively history it became world-known with the song “Die Perle Tirols” (The Pearl of Tyrol). Today, Kufstein is a modern small town with about 18,000 inhabitants which has lost nothing of its historic charm. Between narrow streets, fountains and churches you can find numerous sights but also a lot of shopping opportunities. Especially the Kufstein fortress is particularly worth mentioning, which today houses a museum and serves as a venue for numerous cultural events. Saunter along the Theresienstraße, visit Innsbruck’s most famous balcony, the Golden Roof, go up to the Nordkette with the cable car from the city centre, visit Maximilian I.’s Imperial Palace, the Bergisel mountain with the ski jump and Ambras Castle with its art treasures: Tyrol’s capital Innsbruck lies only one hour by car from Ellmau and offers several historic highlights and sights.

Behind a waterfall coming from a giant’s mouth – devised by André Heller – lies the secret around the Swarovski crystals. In 17 exhibition rooms, fantastic stories around the glass crystals are told. One of them is the crystal cloud made of 800,000 hand-set crystals by Swarovski which floats above a black mirroring water. A shop makes the Crystal Worlds complete. The village of Wattens is located just before Innsbruck and can be reached in about 50 minutes.
